End Of The Year Revue

By Martin J. Smith

In the back of a cloudy dancefloor, an alabaster stage is set. Illuminated by the stars above, closer than they’ve ever been before, a translucent golden curtain is dropped. Out on the dancefloor, filled with thousands wearing golden robes. We see Alan Rickman having martinis with Zsa Zsa Gabor. Muhammad Ali and Chyna are fighting. Elie Weisel and Harper Lee are laughing with Gene Wilder. Garry Marshall and Michael Cimino are talking with Doris Roberts and Patty Duke on a new film written by Curtis Hanson. Alexis Arquette and Lady Chablis taking shots with Glenn Beck and Florence Henderson.

At the front of the stage is a golden roped off section. Above it is a the letter P made of onyx carved onto a slanted oval made of pearl. The Archangel Gabriel guides 49 people of mixed races, genders and ages through the crowd. The 49 are dressed up as Ziggy Stardust, Jareth the Goblin King, Prince, George Michael, Princess Leia, the grandmother from Halloweentown. The crowd parts ways, and the crowd applauds them.

When they reach the VIP section, an angel, shirtless, with muscles for days, flies down and joins them. All 49 are pour themselves drinks, and shout out cheers, clinking their glasses. Then the crowd of thousands starts to quiet down. A box seat floats down and a crystal staircase just appears out of nowhere. We see Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds walking hand and hand. Both of them looking natural, no garb, no strange hairdo. Just two humans. When they enter the box seat, Carrie Fisher looks at the crowd, and says, “The Force is with us!” The entire crowd applauses and cheers!

A voice booms through the concert. “Ladies and Gentlemen! Give it up for George Michael!” The crowd screams.

George Michael starts off by saying, “You put the boom-boom into my heart!” And he goes into song. Everyone is dancing, singing along. He does a medley of “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” “I Want Your Sex,” “Father Figure,” and “Faith.” He then invites those of the 49 whom are dressed up as him onto the stage. He then says to them and to the crowd, “We are finally free! I won’t let you down! I won’t give you up!” And he starts dancing with those on stage.

When he is done singing, the whole crowd is just going crazy. He and his fans get off the stage and join the crowd. The booming voice says, “Here he is! Prince!”

Prince appears from the floor of the alabaster stage, with his famous guitar, dressed in bright glowing, purple that glows. The first words coming out of his mouth are “I was dreaming when I wrote this,” and the crowd just goes wild. He does a medley of “1999,” “Kiss,” “When Doves Cry,” and “Little Red Corvette.” He invites those of the 49 dressed up as him onto the stage, and asks them, “Would you mind strutting your stuff?” And he starts playing "U Got the Look." His fans act like the stage is a catwalk, and ham it up!

He thanks the crowd and gets off the stage, joining the thousands of people.

The concert goes dark. And all we hear is a man angelically shouting, “Ahhhhhh, Ahhhhhh, Ahhhhhh” in ascending pitches. The crowd is absolutely insane at this point! David Bowie starts singing “Let’s Dance,” the first number of a medley along with “Space Oddity,” “Under Pressure,” “Rebel Rebel,” “The Man Who Saved the World,” and before he sings “Young Americans,” he invites his fans to the stage. And he dances with each of them, individually.

“I’d like to invite all of the Pulse victims to the stage,” he says. They all jump on the stage. “I, I can be king. And you, you can be queens.” The crowd laughs. And he sings “Heroes.” There is not a dry eye in the audience. Everyone is swaying, singing along. A bright, warm light shines onto the crowd. And everyone disappears.

This has been a tough year. We lost many people. Celebrities, loved ones. Let them stay in your heart and memories. Let this past year be a reminder of how precious life is. Keep our loved ones close to us. Say, “I love you,” to them.

Let us mourn, but also honor them. Let us remember 2016 as a year where we came together in solidarity. We've gotten closer together as a global community. 2017 May look bleak, but we must stay strong! We must stay together!

Happy New Year everybody, and may it be glorious for you and your loved ones.
