Moulin Rouge! The Musical

It is rare that a show based on a movie can surpass the magic of the original film. Take Mean Girls for example; while the musical itself was good, it does not compare to the iconic film. In contrast, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is one of the rare shows that surpasses the source material. The frenetic, manic, and bizarre energy of the film translates well on stage. From the opening notes of the show, a palpable energy becomes the connective tissue of the entire show. In an almost whiplash induced fantasy, the show moves quickly from number to number, barely giving the performers a moment to breathe.

In an effort to update the show from the 2001 film iteration, several newer pop songs were put into the show. Artists including Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, and more, are featured in several mashups in this film. One of the most iconic moments of this show is a mash-up of Gaga’s Bad Romance and Spears’ ‘Toxic”. In fact, the number was so good that the performers had to hold for applause upon completion of the number.

The show is exciting, thumping, bombastic, and over the top: that is what makes the show work. It is self-aware of how big and chaotic it needs to be, and it embraces its true nature. Elements of camp, lavish set designs, brilliant choreography, and stunning vocals all mesh to the point of pure pop perfection. On every level, Moulin Rouge! The Musical works.

On the opening night, several understudies filled in for some of the main roles. Had I not known this beforehand, I would have never known. All the performances were top notch and seamless.

I have seen almost every Broadway show at this point and Moulin Rouge! The Musical has easily landed in the top 5.

The only downside to this performance was the audience itself. Seattle audiences often lack live theatre etiquette. It was jarring to hear awkward laughter from audience members who recognized a new song in the show, especially when the song was utilized during an emotional relevant moment. It was distracting, as much as the boomers who attend newer musicals and walk out halfway through. Perhaps take the time to read about the show, before walking out on a show that is brilliant. Lack of understanding that the artform continues to evolve is not an excuse for rude behavior.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a must-see show. From the opening notes of ‘Lady Marmalade’, you will be enthralled with the sensory stimulating showcase that unfolds in front of you. See it at the Paramount Theatre now!
